According to a decision of the state government of Schleswig-Holstein, the University Clinics of Kiel and Lübeck have been merged to build together the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) since 2003, while maintaining the existing sites (University Medical Centre campus Luebeck and University Medical Centre Campus Kiel). The then newly founded UKSH is run as an institution under public law in the sponsorship of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
Therefore, the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein also belongs to two different faculties, one of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel, the other the University of Lübeck.
The university clinic comprises 21 wards with a total of 1,200 beds and 15 institutes for medical theory. With almost 5,000 persons employed the university together with the clinic belongs to the biggest employers of the Lübeck region.
