Wewak General Hospital is a fairly large hospital in a town on the North coast of Papua New Guinea. Main specialties at the hospital include Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Medicine and Surgery. There is an Ambulance and Emergency service which elective students can get involved with as well. The staff are all extremely friendly and the opportunity for hands-on experience is second to none; students are encouraged to get involved to whatever level they find most comfortable. Many students have been able to deliver babies and work on C-sections.
Accommodation for elective students is usually at the nearby SIL guesthouse and is basic but adequate. Sister Joseph is no longer at the hospital (see previous student reviews) and due to this factor, the hospital has become much less organised, although the hospital still receives positive reviews. The hospital gets some cases that present with interesting pathology and students will see some tropical diseases.
The setting on a peninsula surrounded by beaches and palm trees is also very picturesque and there are opportunities to visit local outlying islands at the weekend.
Email responses from this hospital are very slow as the internet connection is intermittent in this location. If you are interested in going to Wewak, try telephoning the hospital using an international dialing card.
