The Mid Western group of hospitals is a group of four hospitals that provides acute hospital services in Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. The Ennis General Hospital is one of these hospitals and it is currently undergoing reconfiguration and role alteration within the Mid West Region. All acute inpatient and elective surgical services are being transferred to Mid Western Regional Hospital Limerick whilst Ennis Hospital provides an Accident and Emergency Department from 8am to 8pm.
As the hospital no longer operates a 24 hour Accident and Emergency service, the hospital has incorporated an Acute Medical Unit that provides GPs with direct referral facilities.
The redevelopment of Ennis Hospital will include the development of new Outpatient and Day Surgical Services, which will incoprorate Maxillofacial, ENT and Orthopaedic surgery units. The hospital is also currently developing a new Endoscopy Suite, which will be contained wholly within the existing building which will be modified to accommodate the new unit and an adjoining Day Ward.
The population of the Mid-West region is approximately 361,000 people, meaning that the four hospitals of the Mid Western Group serve a large and dispersed population.
