Gudalur Adivasi Hospital

District General Hospital | Gudalur, India

Hospital description

This is a small hospital, established in 1990, which supports the local tribal Adivasi population; a hospital FOR the tribals BY the tribals. It is fully integrated into a community health program. It’s run by Dr. Nandakumar (NK) Menon (surgeon), and Dr. Shyla Devi (gynecologist). The Adivasi, who have historically been ignored by services, including healthcare, saw the need to establish a clinic or hospital on their own to gain access to a health care system and were supported therein by the two doctors. Today there are more than 60 tribal staff in all positions, handling the various aspects of the work with competence. The hospital has well-equipped wards with a maternity unit, operating rooms with modern anaesthesia machines and laproscopic instruments, functional X ray and Ultrasound machines, and a blood bank. In 2015 the hospital could count 1536 inpatients.

This is an extremely popular and well-loved elective in a supportive and friendly environment.
