Greenlane is a small hospital with particular emphasis on cardiothoracic surgery and is New Zealand’s premier centre for cardiac surgery, cardiology, respiratory medicine and otolaryngology. It is well-equipped but not very busy, although this may change due to the new elective surgery centre that opened at the hospital in April 2011. Within the original centre, the new surgical centre is designed to facilitate an increase in same day-stay elective procedures. It will also allow for procedures which require overnight post-operative care. The Greenlane Surgical Centre contains three new operating rooms as well as one refurbished and extended operating room.
The new surgical centre also includes an expanded pre-operation area, new Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) and a new overnight ward which will open mid 2012. Further improvements will continue into 2012 at Greenlane hospital as a new home dialysis unit is due to open in late 2011 and a new eye clinic will open in early 2012, expanding the variety of services offered by this specialist hospital.
The Greenlane Clinical Centre concept is very different from traditional hospital settings. The centre offers outpatient services and day stay surgery and has a comparatively relaxed environment with patients visiting by appointment. Once complete, the centre will boast eleven medical departments and 62 consulting rooms, with a wide range of resident specialists, including dentists and pharmacists.
