Hospital description

This is a small, rural hospital with general adult medical/surgical wards, a maternity department, a children’s ward, a renal dialysis unit, an emergency department, two operating theatres and a physiotherapy unit. This hospital takes patients from a vast area (approximately 340,000 square kilometres) of the Northern Territory and the area covered extends as far as the Western Australian and Queensland borders. The hospital is accredited for general practice training and fully supported by specialists based in Darwin. Flinders University Rural Clinical School is based on the hospital campus and medical students do rotations at the hospital. Additionally, aeromedical retrievals are organised from Katherine and 85% of patients are Aboriginal.

This is a true outback experience for the medical student.
