Gimbie Adventist Hospital (GAH) is located in Gimbie Town, a semi-urban setting, 9 hrs. away by land travel from Addis Ababa. The nearest domestic airport is Asosa, the nearest international airport is Bole.
The GAH as a mission hospital was formerly affiliated with Adventist Health International (AHI), but is now under the Ethiopia Union Mission of Seventh-day Adventist International Church, based in Addis Ababa.
The hospital has been in operation since 1947. A new 71 bed hospital building was opened in 2002. The hospital offers the full range of in-patient services including internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, infectious diseases, obstetrics and gynaecology.
Approximately 2,500 patients are admitted each year and a further 15,000 are seen annually in the out-patient department. The hospital provides twice weekly outreach maternal and child health services and community education to surrounding villages. Seven rural clinics are affiliated with the hospital, providing services to approximately 22,500 patients each year.
Loma Linda University (LLU) California is working together with this hospital and with the Gimbie Hospital School of Nursing. All LLU students are eligible to apply for a place in the program ‘Students for International Mission Service’ (http://www.llu.edu/central/sims/ethiopa_gimbe.page).
