200 bed hospital more than 1,500 meters /5,000 feet up the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro. 108 year old mission hospital with 12 doctors. Informal teaching in clinics, ward rounds, opportunity to assist in theater/labour ward. Staff speak English, patients speak a little English but mostly Swahili/tribal language.
There are about 150 Clinical Officer (low level physicians) students and the same number of nursing students that the foreign students can interact with.
The HIV-AIDs Care and treatment center has approx 1,200 clients.
Machame is quite safe, in fact safer than the cities most foreign students come from.Hospital is 1km from start of Kilimanjaro trek. Never hot and sometimes quite cool with unlimited hiking opportunities. Safaris to Serengeti /Ngorogoro Natl Parks can be arranged in Moshi. Zanizibar also close by.
