The Launceston General Hospital is a 300 bed public hospital and one of the three main medical facilities in Tasmania. It provides acute care facilities for residents of Launceston and the Northern regions of the island, treats over 24,000 inpatients each year and is affiliated with the Royal Flying Doctors Service. The hospital is the largest in the region and employs some 1,340 staff; it is a twent-four hour facility but the departments within it have their own operating hours.

As an accredited teaching hospital, the Launceston General Hospital has a close partnership with the University of Tasmania through the Launceston Clinical School and the School of Nursing based in Launceston. Elective placements are available from October until February.
