Middlemore hospital is an acute hospital of 800 beds in South Auckland which serves a population of approximately half a million people. It is a high-tech hospital with a very busy Accident and Emergency department. Middlemore is the largest hospital operated by Counties Manukau District Health Board and offers secondary-level (hospital and specialist) care and a selected range of community and domiciliary services to an area that stretches from Otahuhu to Port Waikato.
The hospital also provides several specialist tertiary services both regionally and nationally. These niche specialities include orthopaedic and plastic surgery, burns and spinal injury rehabilitation. Associated with the University of Auckland, Middlemore Hospital is one of the largest tertiary teaching hospitals in New Zealand, and cares for more than 91,000 in-patients annually, and is equipped to handle in excess of 354,000 day-patients and outpatient attendances. The hospital employs some 4,700 staff to cater for this demand.
