The hospital dates back to 1907. It was the first municipal hospital in Germany. Until then, general hospitals were operated either by churches or by the administration for the poor. This first municipal hospital was offering not only medical help for the poor but also the most modern medicine for all citizens of the city. Today, the Düsseldorf University hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Germany and is built within its own complex comprising many seperate buildings for each speciality. It consists of 30 clinics and 30 institutes. Each year it treats 47,000 in-patients and 160,000 out patients.
The newsmagazine Focus named it one of the best 20 hospitals in Germany in its 2018 ranking of German hospitals. It is also a top hospital in the treatment of breast cancer, diabetes, vascular surgery, cardiology, multiple sclerosis and prostata cancer.
Located close to the centre of Düsseldorf, the hospital is easily reached by train, tram and bus. Düsseldorf itself offers great connections by train to all parts of Germany due to its central location in the Ruhrgebiet, one of the most densely populated areas in Germany.
