The Universitaetsklinikum des Saarlandes (UKS) was founded in 1947 under the patronage of the University of Nancy (France) on the grounds of the former psychiatric hospital in Homburg, a small town near Saarbruecken (a half hour drive) with a population of 42.000 inhabitants. Today, the Saarland University Hospital is a centre of medical excellence in Saarland providing a broad spectrum of medical and health services to the region and farther afield. It consists of 30 clinics and 20 institutes, and offers a comprehensive range of medical, surgical, diagnostic and healthcare services covering practically all areas of modern medical practice and on a very high standard. They treat more than 50.000 in-patients and over 200.000 out-patients a year.
