In 1978, the foundation stone of the hospital is laid and the Department of Dentistry and Somatology was the first part to open in 1984. The Regensburg University Hospital on its own was founded in 1992 and is one of the most modern hospitals in Germany. The hospital has around 4,300 employees and in 2015 dealt with 137,000 outpatients and 32,500 patients in hospital. In addition to its 883 beds it has 52 day clinic treatment places.
The University Hospital Regensburg is the only tertiary health care provider in Eastern Bavaria, a region with about 2 Million inhabitants. With a case-mix-index of 2, Regensburg is the leading German university hospital and thus the most efficient tertiary health care provider in Germany. It is divided into 27 in- and out-patient departments. They cover all the major specialist fields of medicine and dentistry. It has the largest A&E centre in the region and an intensive care helicopter is permanently stationed at the University Hospital to transport patients quickly and safely to and from the hospitals in the area, and other specialist centres throughout Germany.
