This Hospital is not taking medical students on at the moment due to under staffing as of 24/04/13.
The 24 Hour Surgery is a private practice in Christchurch which is funded and run by Pegasus Health Charitable Ltd. This health care provider works closely with the Canterbury District Health Board but is not a government organisation. The surgery provides out of hours cover for most of Christhurch, as well as seeing casual patients/tourists during the day and is the only true 24/7 facility in Christchurch.
In addition to the surgical services that this hospital offers, there are also follow up clinics during the day run by GPs/A&E consultants and orthopaedic consultants. It also has an observation ward and a Radiology department. The doctors at the hospital are a mix of member GP’s (there are 300 of these in the Christchurch area) and nine permanent doctors who are specially trained in providing general practice and accident related medical care.
The clinic provides care for medical issues that would otherwise be dealt with by GPs and also covers accident related injuries such as sprains and cuts.
The hospital is quite small as it mainly operates as an out of hours service for the local GP practices, but it is also able to provide accident care as it has a specialist fracture service within the unit. People with suspected broken a bones are encouraged to attend instead of going to hospital. The care that can be provided at the facility is of a high standard as there are a number of specialist working at the unit who are dedicated specialists; these include an Orthopaedic Surgeon, Emergency Department specialists and Orthopaedic nurses available to treat injuries (including providing plaster casts).
The unit also manages sports injuries and offers a weekend sports clinic for players of clubs and schools who join their Sports Card Programme.
