Haydom Lutheran Hospital began 60 years ago as a Norwegian missionary health post. Over the years it has grown into a major hospital directly serving a mostly rural population of 1 million people. The areas surrounding Haydom are some of the most remote of Tanzania.
Since 2010 the hospital has referral status at regional level and currently (Jan ‘15) employs 3 general surgeons, 2 gynaecologists, 1 orthopedic surgeon and is expecting to welcome back a paediatrician in Sept. ’15. 7 MD’s and 7 AMO’s bring the total number of doctors to 20. The medical doctor intern teaching program also ensure a constant presence of at least 15 medical doctor interns.
The hospital welcomes medical students from all over the world, in 2014 counted students from Norway, Netherlands, UK, USA, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. Medical students almost without exception highly enjoy their rotation at Haydom citing the friendly and relaxed atmosphere, the relatively good clinical functioning of the hospital and adequate supervision, the good hospital guesthouse, the remote and beautiful surroundings and the pleasant climate as main reasons.a
We accept last-year medical students only for a minimum of 6 weeks and 90 days as a recommended maximum stay for Tanzania due to different visa requirements for anyone staying longer than 90 days. We generally allow only a single rotation per 6 week period and medical students generally confirm the benefit of this after experiencing how rewarding the 5th and 6th week are.
We generally plan no more than 2 medical students per ward and a maximum of 12 medical students in total, keeping student numbers low and hands-on experience per student high. This does mean we fill up fast with February to September being the months that generally fill up the fastest.
