As the name might suggest, the hospital was originally founded in the 18th century by a group of monks of the order of St. Maximillian, although at this time it was known as the “Hospital St. Maximillian”. At the beginning of the 20th century the order was able to purchase the building around which the hospital has been built and expanded. The Order of the “Barmherzige Brüder” is a Catholic organisation which also has hospitals in Trier, Regensburg and Vienna, Austria.
The hospital is now a teaching hospital of the Technische Universität München and has a total of 372 beds. It treats around 15,000 in-patients and 22,500 out-patients a year.
