Whangarei Hospital is the main hospital in the Northland District Health Board region. It is a small, modern hospital that originally opened its doors in 1901. It has a busy Accident and Emergency department and is the major referral centre for Northland. The hospital provides a wide range of services including several renal dialysis stations and helicopter transfers.
The hospital also provides a range of community services, including a dedicated Maori Health Service. The hospital takes a very open view of patient care and has a stated aim of assisting patients to deal with a condition in the way that best suits their body, helping where required and offering advice, but allowing patients to manage their care in a reasonable capacity.
