His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said officially opened the University Hospital in February 1990. It is an educational as well as medical institution, performing five main functions teaching medical students, undergraduates and postgraduate medical training, research and providing tertiary medical care.
It is an integral part of the College of Medicine & Health Sciences and therefore both the services and teaching resources are equally shared and integrated between the two, i.e. shared staff, joint committees such as the Hospital Board and the Medical Advisory Committee, Administrative Coordinating Committees, which are the Executive Committees responsible for developing and ensuring implementation of the various policies and procedures.
The hospital stands on an area of approximately 40,000 square meters with a total bed capacity of 528 beds with 380 currently opened and is managed by 1,780 employed staff of high caliber in terms of skills and knowledge as well as their academic and research orientation. The most advanced laboratories and diagnostic equipment operating SQUH support the highly trained staff.
SQUH currently provides several unique services and certain specialized medical facilities that are unique in Oman. The Renal Transplant Unit provides the surgical expertise and laboratory services for kidney transplants as part of a national program in Oman. The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and the Cord Blood Bank are the only ones serving the entire country. The unit of Family and Community Medicine is regarded as an exemplary one by the World Health Organization (WHO), in addition the specialized investigation of various kinds i.e. Clinical Physiology, the one of its kind in the Gulf area.
