Hospital description

Ladysmith is a regional hospital with 453 beds with a bed occupancy of 75%. It is divided into departments and is accredited for the training of interns in all the disciplines. They have an active Anti Retro- Viral programme with nearly 2,000 patients on HAART and another 2,500 being followed up.
The obstetric department conducts 6,000 deliveries a year with 20% of all deliveries being completely by caesarean section. Theout patients dept and A&E departments are very busy. There is a fully equipped lab, X-ray unit with an ultrasound scanner, CT machine, blood bank and four operating theatres. There is a busy orthopaedic department able to perform the full range of operations. All the departments are closely allied with the Chief Specialists in Greys Hospital, Pietermaritzburg.
In common with a lot of other KZN hospitals, the departments are run largely by part time specialists as well as experienced medical officers. As a result there are always vacancies for specialists.
