Royal Stoke University Hospital (formerly the University Hospital of North Staffordshire) is a teaching and research hospital serving the English county of Staffordshire. It lies in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, near the border with Newcastle-under-Lyme, and is one of the largest hospitals in the country and a major local employer, with over 6,000 staff. The facilities were rebuilt and became fully operational in 2015, following a £370 million construction project.
Royal Stoke is a general hospital serving a population of around 700,000 in Staffordshire, as well as providing specialist services to patients from beyond the region: specialising in heart (cardiac and cardiothoracic) surgery, brain surgery (neurosurgery), cancer services, renal and dialysis as well as specialist services and care for children. The Trust is also the major centre for treating trauma and emergency patients.
In 2003 (under a previous Trust) they became a centre for teaching and training doctors working with Keele University. It is the main teaching hospital for Keele University’s School of Medicine and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The clinical undergraduate medical school and postgraduate medical school buildings are in the grounds of the hospital, as well as the Clinical Education Centre and the Keele University Health Library which is the main teaching facility for the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
The hospital is run by the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, alongside County Hospital in Stafford, which is currently being redeveloped. UHNM is a relatively young NHS Trust, being founded in November 2014 following the integration of Stafford Hospital (part of the former Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust) with the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.
