The Centre Hospitalier de Polynésie Française (CHPF – The General Hospital of French Polynesia) is the main hospital in French Polynesia and is situated in Papeete, the nation’s capital, on the island of Tahiti. It is also the biggest multidisciplinary hospital in French Polynesia. The hospital is fairly unique in that it is obliged to take into account geographical constraints, including the dispersion of land area (which represent only 3,800 km2), to fulfill its mission of public health.
Care is provided within the confines of the hospital but also in the islands during specific, but regular health ‘missions’. The pathologies seen in these health ‘missions’ are sometimes different from those in metropolitan areas due to the consequences of the tropical climate and remote, rural location.
