Kalgoorlie is the largest regional hospital in Western Australia, with an Emergency Department which sees 22,000 patients each year, including major trauma. It has a wide range of services, including Aboriginal Health and an Aboriginal Liason Officer. Kalgoorlie is the fifth largest city in Western Australia and daily flights to Perth operate from its busy airport. There are six GPs in Kalgoorlie, three of which are with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and most of whom are involved in teaching students on placements. Specialists visit the hospital by rotation, often from the large hospitals in Perth and Freemantle, and every effort is made to place students who wish to work with particular specialist, however due to the nature of the rotations this may not always be possible.
The town is on the East-West Railway and the Indian Pacific train stops in the town several times a week. Lake Ballard, the home of Antony Gormley’s Inside Australia, is also close by.
As a rural placement, enquiries about this elective should initially be placed through the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia (RCSWA). The RCSWA will enquire at the hospital, and others in rural WA, regarding the opportunity of a placement. There is a faculty fee for this process that will be determined with the University of Western Australia.
