Geraldton, in the Murchison area of Western Australia, is a modern district hospital in one of the region’s busiest ports. It has a wide range of services and was rebuilt in the 1990s on the site of the old hospital, to cope with increasing demands from a growing town. Geraldton has a population of 28,000 and is the fourth largest city in Western Australia. The hospital is located on the Geraldton Health Campus which incorporates a number of facilities including an Aged Care facility and Mental Health facility and the campus accepts referrals from 12 smaller units in the Murchison area. The hospital receives excellent feedback from patients and has a brand new maternity unit. Geraldton Regional Hospital has a good number of specialists, including three consultant general surgeons, one orthopaedic surgeon, one obstetrician/gynaecologist, one paediatrician, one physician, one anaesthetist, one ophthalmologist, three radiologists, three psychiatrists, one psychologist and one vascular surgeon.
Geraldton is classed as a rural placement, therefore enquiries about this elective should initially be placed through the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia (RCSWA). The RCSWA will enquire at the hospital, and others in rural WA, regarding the opportunity of a placement. There is a faculty fee for this process that will be determined with the University of Western Australia.
