This is a modest district general hospital with less than 50 beds located in the tourist area of Margaret River, Western Australia. Offering medical and surgical services, it also has a busy Emergency Department and an Intensive Care Unit. There is also a maternity ward at the hospitals that can facilitate low risk births and there are approximately 80 births at the hospital each year. The placement for this elective is split between Margraret River and Bussleton, so students receive a good all-round elective experience and can also capitalise on the visiting specialists who are regularly at Busselton hospital.
As a rural placement, enquiries about this elective should initially be placed through the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia (RCSWA). The RCSWA will enquire at the hospital, and others in rural WA, regarding the opportunity of a placement. There is a faculty fee for this process that will be determined with the University of Western Australia.
Margaret River attracts half a million tourists every year, with its beautiful beaches, numerous vineyards and picturesque countryside, it is relatively close to Perth and has a pleasant climate.
