This is a busy district hospital in the town of Narrogin, which is in the heart of rural central south Western Australia. The hospital serves a population of 5,000 people. There is good medical coverage in Narrogin, as in addition to the hospital there are two GP practices and a resident surgeon. The hospital has a comprehensive range of services, including a twenty-four hour Emergency Department, a thirty bed acute medical ward and a psychiatric unit. There is also a two-bed palliative and cancer support facility onsite. Narrogin is 119 miles south-east of Perth and serves many of the smaller towns and communities in the surrounding area, many of which do not have doctors available 24 hours a day. There are a number of specialists who visit Narrogin on rotation, including a Cardiologist, Chest Physician, Child Psychologist, Dermatologist, Developmental Paediatrician, Gerontologist, Orthopaedic surgeon, Ophthalmologist, Optometrist, Paediatric Endocrinologist, Psychiatrist (adults), Psychiatrist (children and adolescents), Psychiatrist (seniors), Radiologist, and Rheumatologist. The hospital also offers a variety of diagnostic and complimentary medicine services such as an Audio Clinic, Bowen Practitioners and Clinical Aromatherapists, so can offer a variety of options for an elective student.
Additionally, there is an air ambulance that operates from Narrogin, flying in patients from the surrounding towns or facilitating transfer to Perth via the local Flying Doctors Service when necessary.
As a rural placement, enquiries about this elective should initially be placed through the Rural Clinical School of Western Australia (RCSWA). The RCSWA will enquire at the hospital, and others in rural WA, regarding the opportunity of a placement. There is a faculty fee for this process that will be determined with the University of Western Australia.
