Hospital description

The hospital has 210 beds and provides services in a variety of specialties, including; ortho-trauma, maternity, surgical, medical and paediatrics. It has two operating theatres and an emergency back up theatre, and there is one surgeon at the hospital.

Additional facilities include a hydrotherapy pool with a full rehabilitation clinic, day surgery unit and cardiac rehabilitation unit. There is also an Accident and Emergency department. The hospital is currently undergoing some redevelopment and there is provision for new major and minor incidents and ophthalmic clinics. Some already completed sections of the development include; a modern mortuary with much-improved waiting and viewing facilities which is situated adjacent to a new chapel.

Whilst this hospital is not a teaching hospital, it does offer experience through shadowing doctors and NCHD’s. The length of time spent in each department is limited to a maximum period of two weeks, but there is no limit to the total length of placement. The hospital also offers a wide range of departments in which students may be placed. This includes;

General Medicine, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopaedics & Trauma, Anaesthesia, Radiology, E.N.T., Ophthalmology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pathology, Psychiatry, General Practice and Accident & Emergency.

Gibraltar is ideally located to explore Southern Spain and Northern Africa, and will provide an elective student with an experience of what it is like to live on ‘The Rock.’
