Our Lady’s Hospice is based in Kalingalinga, Lusaka and is a faith-based centre that cares for a large outpatient population (over 3,500 people), many of whom require HIV/AIDS treatment. The hospice also has an intensive care unit and pallative care ward to look after patients who require inhouse care. The hospice is supported by the Zambian Ministry of Health and is also staffed in part by physicians from the University Teaching Hospital. Our Lady’s Hospice also seeks to meet the physical, spiritual and psycho-social needs of patient and their families.
Although the hospice does provide traditional hospice care in the form of pallative care, it has also evolved in line with the definition of pallative care. namely, that it now also undertakes Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART), offering an improved quality of life for patients suffering from life-threatening illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer. Therefore the range of care offered at the hospice has grown.
The majority of the patients at the hospice are outpatients, however, there are a minority who are admitted to the inpatient wards for more intensive treatment or end of life care.
