This is a general hospital catering for the island of Gozo, the smaller of the two main Maltese islands. The hospital has 159 beds and covers a variety of specialisations. Ta’ L-Ibrag is a newer part of the hospital with 100 psychiatric and geriatric beds. The hospital is community oriented and has previously run blood drives which are organised through the hospital’s Blood Donation Department.
The hospital has recently upgraded equipment, including a CT scanner and Mammogram machine is able to treat more patients on site, with less of a requirement for transfer to Malta. The funding which has made these items available has also provided funding to improve the theatre and general surgery facilities, so students can expect to have state-of-the-art equipment available in these areas if taking an elective at the Gozo General Hospital.
The Hospital’s functions are supported by paramedical services, including laboratory and radiology services, speech-language therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, a Hyperbaric Unit and ECG.
