Tangerang Hospital is located in the poorer district of Tangerang, a town in the Banten province of Indonesia. Tangerang is about 25 kilometres from Jakarta and is the third largest urban centre in the region. The hospital serves a population of over 1.5 million people. The maternity ward at the hospital is very busy, with approximately 15 births each day, some of which require emergency procedures. Due to the high incidence of births the hospital has worked in partnership with the Extending Service Delivery (ESD) project run by USAID (TEN is not responsible for external web content). This project has enabled the hospital to cut childbirth related deaths by two thirds and newborn deaths by some 50%, so the hospital is an interesting prospect for students interested in specialising in Obstetrics.
The hospital has also received much support from the European Union and the World Health Organisation, which provided an Avian Flu isolation unit for the hospital at the end of 2011, as well as helping to spearhead an initiative to increase awareness of the disease in Indonesia.
