The clinic is located in the district of La Esperanza, which is one of the poorer areas of the city of Trujillo. Funding is provided by the congregation of Catholic nuns who manage the facility, private donations and the small charges made to patients. Costs are also kept down through the goodwill of the many doctors who work at the facility on vastly reduced rates.
La Clinica Madre de Christo is only five years old and provides a 24 hour a day service to the local community.
With a focus on maternity and paediatrics, the 16 bed clinic has a number of departments including dental, internal medicine, ophthalmology, physiotherapy, general surgery, radiography, psychology, urology, and dermatology. The clinic is also equipped with a laboratory, pharmacy and nutrition services.
This elective location is ideal for students wishing to gain experience in several areas of medicine, as opposed to students looking to focus on just one or 2 areas of medicine.
The clinic covers a variety of areas of medicine despite not being a very large facility. This, and the helpful attitude of staff, means that elective participants will have the opportunity to spend just a short period of time in each department. Of course, those participants wishing to focus on a particular area of medicine are welcome.
The Medical Elective Network is also working with La Clinica Madre de Cristo to develop short term health campaigns to the surrounding areas.
