Lethem is the capital of Region 9, Rupununi. The city is on the border with Brazil and has a very small airport. The Lethem surrounds are sparsely populated savannah and small areas of jungle. The Lethem Public Hospital is the main Guyanese hospital for the area (there are hospitals across the border) and the residence of the only doctors in the town, all of whom are primarily General Practitioners.
There are four wards at the hospital (male, female, paediatric and obstetric), two side rooms largely used for infectious cases, one delivery room, one theatre and post op recovery room (which is not currently in use), two treatment rooms, a small pharmacy, out-patient clinics for general medicine, infectious disease, physiotherapy and pre-natal monitoring.
This hospital is government funded and sits close to the Brazilian border. Cases requiring specialist treatment may be referred to Georgetown where there are more specialised facilties. This is a good elective for someone wanting to work in a fairly remote community. To get a better idea of the services offered in this region of Guyana, read the 2010 service agreement between the region and the Ministry of Health here (you will need PDF).
You can make contact with this hospital by telephoning or arranging a meeting with the Secretary for the Regional Director of Region 9 at the Ministry of Health in Georgetown. Please see the contact details for the hospital. There is currently no email address available.
