The hospital can be reached via free pick up from Karatu, twice in the morning. Return is by pick up at 3 or 4 pm. The hospital is an 80 bed establishment with a minor and major surgical theatre, a male ward, female ward, paediatrics ward (with often few patients), and an obstetrics and gynaecology ward which is by far the busiest. It has limited laboratory facilities. Ultrasound and bloods are possible but ECG can only be done by the doctor in charge and thus was never done in our time there. The four wards are based int two reasonnably new buildings around a grassy ‘courtyard’. Opposite them are the laboratories and ultrasound room and the outpatients building which is run by clinical officers as a cross between A+E and GP. Clinical officers do all the clerking and have three years of medical training.
