The Royal Columbian Hospital is the oldest hospital in British Columbia. It is affiliated to the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine and is located in New Westminster in the eastern part of the state. The hospital is also one of the busiest hospitals in the Fraser Health Authority and is known for its trauma care, neurosurgery department and open heart surgery. The hospital is the only tertiary care facility in British Columbia that can perform open heart surgery on expectant mothers.
The hospital has an excellent referral record, with many patients doing very well when they are transferred back to their original hospital. Many of the staff at the hospital also work at the nearby Eagle Ridge Hospital. The hospital is also equipped with a helipad and air ambulance services.
