The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center is the leading trauma hospital in the USA, it is affiliated to the University of Maryland and is incorporated into the Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. The hospital is named for Dr R Adams, who is considered a pioneer of trauma medicine and was the creator of the ‘Golden Hour’ rule for treatment of trauma patients. The centre is dedicated to the care of the critically ill and it is also one of the first hospitals to employ groundbreaking research in its treatment programmes.
The hospital is an integral part of the Maryland Emergency Medical Services (EMS) System, the first of its kind and a model for other EMS systems worldwide.
