The Thames Hospital is administrated by the Waikato District Health Board; it is a small hospital which contains medical and surgical wards and which provides secondary care to the people of Thames and the extended population of the Coromandel Peninsula. The hospital provides consultant services in the emergency department, general medicine, general surgery, assessment and rehabilitation. The hospital also provides primary birthing services which are lead by lead maternity carers.
A full range of outpatient clinics are available from resident and visiting consultants, and nurses in an ambulatory setting. The hospital is also piloting a scheme that sees local general practitioners from the Thames Medical Centre helping to treat and discharge patients in Thames Hospital’s Emergency Department on Saturdays. This is a three month pilot scheme which will be applied throughout the rest of the Waikato District Health Board’s rural communities to strengthen health workforce sustainability if successful. Therefore this could be an interesting elective for students who are interested in streamlining services in rural areas, or who would like to work in a rural setting, in close conjunction with local General Practitioners as well as hospital staff.
