This elective is organised through Projects Abroad.
This is a privately-funded hospital. It is staffed with well-experienced doctors and friendly nurses. It offers a good opportunity to observe Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Maternity, Neonatal care and Paediatrics. The Hospital has other departments like a Dental Practice, Orthopaedics (Bone and Joint centre), Physiotherapy and Dermatology.
The midwives in this hospital are all nurse-midwives, educated in a bio-medical (anatomy and physiology) understanding of pregnancy, birth and postpartum. They are qualified as both nurses and midwives and they attend only 12 percent of births in India, according to the latest (1999) National Family Health Survey. Almost all of these attended births are within an institution of some kind.
Doctors, or other ‘medically trained’ staff attend the remainder. However, due to the stated government policy of “institutionalised births for all” and the increasing affordability of hospital births, women are increasingly turning away from the tradition of giving birth at home to giving birth in medical establishments. In hospitals, birth is most commonly under the control of doctors and not midwives.
