Tauranga Hospital

District General Hospital | Tauranga, New Zealand

Hospital description

Tauranga Hospital is a large secondary hospital providing services to the growing population of the Western Bay of Plenty. In addition to the secondary services provided, the hospital is also a base for a range of associated clinical support services, such as rehabilitation, speech therapy, physiotherapy, and stroke and cardiac support.

The beds at Tauranga Hospital are mainly provided for medical and surgical patients (including critical and coronary care) but also include a Special Care Baby Unit, Maternity and Mental Health beds, with some set aside for children and older patients. The hospital serves one of the fastest growing populations in New Zealand and the campus has undergone significant development in recent years so that the on site health services can be expanded to match the developing demand. This includes the construction of a new wing which has new theatres, an outpatients department and maternity unit. A number of services for this district hospital are provided through visiting specialists; these include renal medicine, oncology, haematology and dermatology.

Tauranga Hospital is also a base for clinical and medical trainees and the hospital offers training and placement programmes through the Bay of Plenty District Health Board’s Clinical School.
