The Hospital Trust gained Foundation status on 1st April 2005, following three consecutive years of being rated as a three star performing trust. The Foundation Trust includes the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals, which are located about three miles apart on the south coast.

The hospitals accident and emergency unit sees around 60,000 patients each year, however during summer months this can rise significantly due to local tourism trade.
The hospitals purpose built Ophthalmic Unit is located on site as well as a state-of-the-art Cardiology Service and the award winning Derwent Unit (an orthopaedic service providing hip and knee replacements).

The Royal Bournemouth Hospital is an 711 acute bed site, which includes 272 medical beds, six CCU beds, seven Intensive Treatment Unit and eight on the High Dependency Unit.

The Royal Bournemouth Hospital also provides district-wide services for orthopaedic surgery, vascular surgery and urology. Outpatient clinics are provided for oral surgery, paediatrics, plastic surgery, cardiothoracic and ophthalmology.
