The State Medical and Pharmaceutical University “Nicolae Testemiteanu” has official contract and collaboration with most of the hospitals in Chisinau. It is one of the most important higher education establishments in the Republic of Moldova.
The University was founded on the basis of Sankt-Petersburg Medical Institute, N 2, evacuated during the World War II in Kislovodsk, and ultimately transferred to Chisinau along with all the students and academic staff under the name of the State Medical Institute. The Institute started operating on the 20th of October 1945 having just one faculty – the Faculty of General Medicine, which had 13 departments with 996 students. The educational process was accomplished by 130 teachers, including 15 Professors and 19 PhDs.
The foundation of Chisinau Medical Institute served as an incentive for the development of medical higher education in Moldova as well as for the consolidation of the health system in the Republic. In 1954 the Faculty of Paediatrics was founded, along with the Faculty of Stomatology in 1959, the Faculty of Preventive Medicine in 1963 and the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1964.
Due to the conscientious work of the academic staff and their rich scientific experience, the academic system is undergoing continuous change and improvement. This qualitative development and the great success obtained internationally has placed the University amongst the 50 best medical schools in Europe, out of the 250 that exist. The diploma of the State Medical and Pharmaceutical University “Nicolae Testemiteanu” is recognized throughout the world.
Within the 82 departments, the 10 courses and the 14 scientific laboratories there are 1000 specialists, including 15 academicians and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova, honorary members of academies in other countries, 143 professors and 547 PhDs in medicine, and 21 Laureates of the State Prize in the field of science and technique. Along with the educational and academic activity this potential allows the maintenance of collaborative relations in the field of medical science and practice with more than 140 clinics and universities in France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Holland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, USA, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, etc.
