Hospital description

The Academic Medical Center (AMC) is one of the eight university medical centers in the Netherlands and in the field of academic medicine among the international elite.
The AMC was established in 1983. Two hospitals in the inner city, the Wilhelmina Hospital and Binnengasthuis came under one roof with the medical faculty of the University of Amsterdam. This was the first AMC Dutch university medical center. In 1988, the Emma Children’s Hospital also became part of the new university hospital.

Besides the hospital departments and faculty departments the AMC also hosts the Dutch Institute for Neuroscience, the medical department of the Royal Tropical Institute and the Academic Psychiatric Centre.
