Aker sykehus is part of Oslo University Hospital which is a large state run hospital in Oslo, acting as both a regional and national referral centre. It is centrally placed in Norwegian medical research and is a teaching hospital for Oslo University. It is a highly specialised hospital that offers a wide range of services services for the Oslo population. The hospital also has a nationwide responsibility for a number of national and multi-regional assignments and has several national centres of competence.
Oslo University Hospital is Scandinavia’s largest hospital and each year it offers more than 1.2 million patient treatments and is responsible for approximately 50 percent of all medical and healthcare research conducted at Norwegian hospitals; therefore the hospital is a significant player within Norwegian and, by extension Scandanavian, medical education. The hospital is also an emergency hospital for East and Southern Norway.
Oslo University Hospital contains nine defined medical divisions in addition to the central unit Oslo Hospital Services, which provides non-medical services to the rest of the hospital. The hospital employs more than 20,000 people so students should expect to be in a very busy environment. It is owned by the South-Eastern Regional Health Authority and consists of the former health trusts of Aker University Hospital, Rikshospitalet University Hospital and Ullevål University Hospital. Merging the former health trusts of Aker University Hospital, Rikshospitalet University Hospital and Ullevål University Hospital to the new trust of Oslo University Hospital, has brought together professional environments from each unit, thus providing patients with services which are even better adapted to their needs.
