Newcastle Eye Centre

Specialist Hospital/Clinic | Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

Hospital description

This specialist Eye Department is based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and is one of the largest in the UK, seeing somewhere in the region of 100,000 patients every year. We are a regional centre of excellence treating all types of common eye conditions affecting both adults and children, as well as providing a range of highly specialised and cutting-edge services. We also run an Emergency Eye service for patients with emergency eye problems.

We have around 200 highly skilled healthcare professionals here who share a wealth of experience in the care and treatment of the full spectrum of eye conditions and disorders, including nationally and internationally renowned experts in their chosen fields.

Through our collaboration with Newcastle University, we have a long tradition of being fore-runners in adopting innovative services, such as corneal transplant and the treatment of macular degeneration with photo dynamic therapy. This means that our patients often benefit from leading edge drug treatment and treatment techniques.

Our purpose-built modern unit in Claremont Wing at the RVI has state of the art diagnostic and treatment facilities for all types of medical and surgical conditions affecting the eye, including:

  • Cataracts
  • Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)
  • Glaucoma (diseases which affect vision)
  • Orbit (including eye socket)
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Corneal disorders
  • Uveitis (inflammation of part of the uveal tract of the eye)
  • Squints (for adults and children)
  • Lacrimal (conditions affecting the tear duct)
  • Neuro-Ophthalmology (conditions affecting nervous system in the eye)
  • Vitreoretinal (condition affecting the retina)

As most of our patients are referred to our care from all over the North East, we work in close partnership with many of our local hospitals to hold clinics there, which means we can provide our expertise closer to our patients’ homes.
