Hospital description

Dokkyo Medical University Hospital is the first of two hospitals affiliated with Dokkyo Medical University, a private university located in the town of Mibu, Tochigi.

The University Hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art medical devices such as PET/CT and capsule endoscopes. It is designated for liver and lung transplant operations and in January 2010 the “Doctor Helicopter” transport service was set up for emergencies in Tochigi.

The hospital has been established as a technologically advanced hospital, meaning it offers highly advanced medical treatment and meets requirements such as having over 10 specified clinical departments, over 500 beds and intensive care units.

In 1990, the hospital opened a Center for Senile Dementia to improve healthcare and welfare services for elderly dementia patients.

In 1997 the Center for Perinatal Medicine was opened to provide advanced medical care to high-risk pregnant women and premature babies beyond the conventional boundaries of obstetrics and pediatrics.

In 2001, the Center for Optical Medicine was founded. Its Endoscopy Section provides endoscopic diagnosis and treatment in the gastroenterological and respiratory field. The Ultrasound Section consists of the Cardiac Ultrasound Unit, the Abdominal Ultrasound Unit and the Surface Ultrasound Unit.

The Department of Trauma and Critical Care Center was founded in 2002, providing tertiary emergency care covering the south and the part of the west emergency care area in Tochigi Prefecture.

The hospital also has a Children’s Medical Center which was set up in 2004 and plays an important role in advanced specialised medical care, concentrating on various functions of pediatric care. The center is home to the Branch Classroom of Tochigi School for Handicapped Children, where education is carried out according to the children’s physical condition and progress.

The hospital also has a P.E.T (Positron Emission Tomography) Center which was set up in 2005. The center was set up chiefly for cancer detection and is expected to play a leading part in the detection and treatment of cancer in the North Kanto area.

Located very close to Mibu Interchange of Kita-Kanto Expressway, which intersects Tohoku Expressway, Dokkyo Medical University is as accessible as any university or hospital in the suburbs of Tokyo. the University is also located within easy reach of places of scenic beauty and historic interest such as Nikko, Nasu, the Kinugawa River and the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, which is a world heritage site.
