The Ryukyu University Hospital is the only specialized general hospital in Okinawa. In 2007 it was appointed as the community AIDS Clinical Center, in 2008 it was established as a stronghold hospital for cancer therapy and then for liver disease in 2009.
The hospital functions as the focal point of advanced medical care in Okinawa and is expected to contribute to community healthcare and medical treatment against infectious diseases in Southeast Asia. In March 2011, the hospital was established as a stronghold for medical care in a remote area.
