Wilhelm Schulthess (1855 – 1917), internist, pediatrician and general practitioner, soon turned to orthopedics and founded with his surgical partner PD Dr. August Lüning 1883 the Orthopaedic Institute at Löwenstrasse in Zurich. The Orthopaedic Institute moved in 1896 to a new building in Zurich, Neumünsterallee, since 1995 the Schulthess Clinic is located between Balgrist and Burghölzli at Lengghalde on the outskirts of Zurich. In summer 2006, the Schulthess Clinic completed an extension to meet the ever-growing number of surgeries and medical services. Since 1935, the clinic is under the ownership of the Wilhelm Schulthess-Foundation.
Today, the Schulthess Clinic – Musculoskeletal Centre is one of the leading orthopaedic clinics in Europe with more than 900 employees. The clinic performs 8,800 operations, over 20,000 procedures and sees 7400 inpatients per year.
