The Centro Osa Mayor is a women’s health centre located in the town of Tulum in the Yucatán peninsula. The town of Tulum is built by the site of the ancient Mayan town of the same name, and is nestled between the Caribbean coast and the jungle. The archeological ruins of the ancient town, coupled with the breathtaking coastline and tropical forests, the wildlife of the region, and the tropical climate, make Tulum a popular tourism destination. The town has grown rapidly over the past decades and boasts a thriving hotel and restaurant district.
The Centro Osa Mayor is a private birth centre, which consists of a team of experienced traditional midwives and apprentice midwives, led by founder Sabrina Speich, and supported by an obstetrician-gynecologist. Using traditional methods developed through practice, Osa Mayor offers holistic care from all stages of pregnancy through to birth and lactation to patients from throughout the Quintana Roo region – many from the indigenous Maya community. As well as birthing, this includes antenatal classes, dance groups, medicinal botany classes, and social events.
They employ traditional Mayan birth techniques, combined with the principles of respect, harmony and maternal autonomy, and a priority of offering evidence-based care. As well as traditional birthing, specialities of the centre include home births, waterbirthing, and ‘humane hospital births’.
