The Spital Sursee was founded in 1975, since 1999 it worked together with the Spital Wolhusen under the name KSSW Sursee-Wolhusen. Sursee is a small town with less than 10,000 inhabitants, surrounded by beautiful mountains, and it takes you only 20 minutes by train to reach the bigger city Lucerne. In 2004 a full refurbishment and further extension was decided which was completed in 2007 (including an ambulance, heliport, new OR and a new radiology department).
Since 1. January 2008 the cantonal hospitals Sursee, Luzern, Wolhusen and Montana LHM are under the umbrella of Luzerner Kantonsspital (LUKS). The LUKS is the biggest non-university hospital in Suisse. It is recognised as an academic teaching hospital and works closely with the universities of Basel, Bern and Zurich.
The specialty of Sursee lies in the field of abdomen and abdominal organs; in surgery it is the visceral surgery (abdominal organs and the abdominal wall), in medicine it has expanded its expertise in the field of gastroenterology.
