The hospital was founded in 1912 by Oscar Vulpius who also lent the hospital his name. What started as a sanatorium for bone and joint tuberculosis is today an orthopaedic competence centre. The hospital has several departments: orthopaedic and trauma surgery, hand surgery, shoulder and elbow surgery, foot and ankle surgery and conservative orthopaedics and pain therapy. A department for children’s orthopaedics is currently under construction.
The newsmagazine Focus ranked it as one of the top national hospitals for orthopaedics in its 2017 ranking of German hospitals.
The hospital has an affiliation with the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg and acts as a teaching hospital (Akademisches Lehrkrankenhaus) that will accept German students during their practical year (Praktisches Jahr). Places are available in orthopaedics.
