The Agaplesion Bethanien Krankenhaus in Heidelberg is a modern geriatric centre with around 350 members of staff, who treat approximately 2,500 patients in the centre for acute geriatrics and another 1,000 elderly patients in the clinic for geriatric rehabilitation.
The hospital first opened its doors in 1913, back then it was a hospital for wounded soldiers. In 1930 it was purchased by the Bethanien deaconesses of Frankfurt (Diakonissenverein Bethanien in Frankfurt) who turned it into a general district hospital. The restructuring to become a dedicated geriatric hospital began in 1979 and in 1983 the day clinic started its service, followed in 1992 by the centre for geriatric rehabilitation.
The hospital has an affiliation with the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg and acts as a teaching hospital (Akademisches Lehrkrankenhaus) that will accept German students during their practical year (Praktisches Jahr). Places are available in geriatrics and internal medicine.
