The protestant city mission (Evangelische Stadtmission) runs the St. Vincent hospital which is situated in the old part of Heidelberg right at the banks of the river Neckar. It is a specialised hospital for internal medicine. Its main units are: Internal Medicine, Internal intensive care, Haematology-Oncology-Rheumatology and Palliative Medicine. The hospital opened its doors in 1915, more than 2,500 patients are treated here every year.
The hospital has an affiliation with the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg and acts as a teaching hospital (Akademisches Lehrkrankenhaus) that will accept German students during their practical year (Praktisches Jahr). Places are available in internal medicine.
